She studied for her undergraduate degree as a mature-age student, and progressed from there to complete a Graduate Diploma in women’s studies, a Bachelor of Education in counselling, a Master of Psychology (child and education) and a PhD, writing a thesis on the ‘Genesis of Body Image Dissatisfaction in Children’. REVIEWS REVIEWS REVIEWS Eleonora Gullone This is a book that should have been written a long time ago. Going through the book, I was impressed by the amount and breadth of information that it provides. In her introduction, the author extends a generous invitation for feedback, particularly regarding any unanswered questions that readers may have. Having read over the book, I cannot imagine that readers will have too many unanswered questions. This is a real gem of a book — a must read for anyone who is curious about what psychology is, who psychologists are, and what the pathways are for pusuing a career in psychology. There is also a most useful listing of accredited courses in Australia as well as psychology contacts around the world. How useful to have all of this information in one succinct volume. I will certainly ensure that I have several copies in my library for my own reference and for sharing with my students.
Paula Teggelove As a senior VCE psychology teacher for more than 10 years, a university tutor, and as a psychologist, I know all too well the difficulty students have in understanding the requirements for registration as a psychologist. The fact that there are different pathways, different requirements across states, and various organisations with which one must be familiar, makes the process seem quite complicated, and often daunting. At last, here is a book that details everything you need to know about becoming a psychologist. Marion Kostanski’s clear, easy to read format explains what psychology is, how it has developed as a profession, as well as a description of the various streams within the profession. Marion details the very first stages of the journey by taking the reader through a brief synopsis of the areas of study which all undergraduate students are likely to encounter. She then provides a clear overview of the various pathways available in the postgraduate years. It is the latter stages, with all its possibilities, that often finds the student of psychology in a state of confusion and uncertainty. Marion Kostanski’s style of writing is personal. As she speaks to the reader, the profession comes alive and the pieces of the puzzle come together. I am delighted to read such a clear and accurate depiction of the process involved in becoming a psychologist. I cannot recommend it highly enough to the budding psychologist as a means of gaining a clear overview of all that is required. www.australianacademicpress.com.au |
