MENDS Counsellor Manual:                                    grphic
A Structured Approach to
Assisting Men in Relationship Crisis

Owen Pershouse
Clinicl and Forensic Psychologist in Private Practice

“...a program of world standard in addressing one of the most serious social issues of our time.” — FOREWORD by Steve Bidulph.

Men fare poorly in several measurable areas after a relationship breakdown and appear to take longer to reconstitute healthy and productive lifestyles after separation or divorce. The MENDS program aims to reduce anxiety and depression, as well as contain anger and enhance client self-judgments and senses of wellbeing by providing valid and practical information, along with effective methods of self-auditing, planning and progress evaluation. The 12-week program adopts a structured, psycho-educational, and multidisciplinary forum for clients to address areas of psychological wellbeing, physical health, legal/social issues, and relationships. Importantly, the MENDS program focuses on the male experience of key transition issues occurring during separation or relationship crisis, in order to help participants develop a personal and practical ‘map and compass’. The manual inlcudes a CD of printable client homework and information handouts.

OVERVIEW

Download Chapter 2 — Development of the MENDS Program

"When my own matrimonial disaster occurred some years ago I looked for help from books — and found none. I decided to fill the void by writing what has since been published as Men After Separation. Since then a number of men’s support groups have emerged, with MENDS a leader in the field. Its architect, Owen Pershouse, is not only a compassionate and concerned human being, but is also a highly qualified and experienced psychologist. This manual is the culmination of many years of practical work by Owen and his colleagues. It has refined the MENDS program and procedures to produce state-of-the-art counselling for those desperate men facing the trauma of separation."
Ian Macdonald
Author of Men After Separation

"The largest and most unacknowledged mental health risk in Australia today is among recently separated and divorced men … Over 1200 men have completed the MENDS program, and its measurable outcomes in reduced conflict, positive cooperation in raising children, and healed and restored lives, are impressive and uplifting. Men who are calmer, kinder, happier, able to get on with their lives, and form future relationships on a completely different basis of awareness and cooperation. The MENDS program stands now as a very mature and usable tool for the helping professions, a program of world standard in addressing one of the most serious social issues of our time."
