Established in 1987 by managing director and psychologist, Stephen May, Australian Academic Press has become Australia’s premier independent publisher for the behavioural sciences, producing an impressive range of academic journals and books.

Publisher and OwnerStephen May BSc (Hons) Psychology

Stephen has over 20 years experience in the digital publishing and design industry as well as 7 years tertiary training in the fields of psychology and vertebrate biology. He is a registered psychologist who graduated from the University of Queensland in 1984 and went on to pursue postgraduate study in both psychology and neuroanatomy. Stephen left his university work in 1987 to establish Australian Academic Press as an independent publishing house servicing both the behavioural sciences and the commercial sector. A member of the Australian Publisher’s Association (APA) since 1993, he served on the APA Independent Publisher’s Committee from 2000 to 2006. He is a founding member of the Australian chapter of the UK-based Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) and was appointed in 2008 to the Editorial Board of Learned Publishing, the journal of the ALPSP. He has participated in various scholarly and periodical publishing workshops and forums over the years and holds a particular interest in emerging trends in electronic publishing and distribution within academia. He has personally edited an extensive range of scientific and professional texts and written professionally for both magazines and newspapers on psychological topics. He has presented invited talks to editors, librarians and psychologists on the role of the publisher in the social sciences as well presenting at scientific conferences in Australia and the United States. He remains highly enthusiastic about psychology and working with psychologists to promote the advancement of the profession and its application to everyday life. He bought his first Apple computer in 1986 (a secondhand 64K Apple II+) and remains addicted to the platform.
